Residence Waterfall Avenue, Westcliff

with Slee & Co

Residence Waterfall was a three bedroom  post WWII Arts and Crafts character house with a number of random outbuildings and a dated 70's interior renovation. Home to a family of six, the house required expansion and revitalisation. From the onset  it was decided to restore the original character through contemporary interpretation of the style. All additions were demolished and replaced with carefully positioned  subsidiary buildings united by courtyards for a cohesive whole. Elements such as original timber floors, Oregon pine door frames, joinery elements and chandeliers found under the floor boards were restored and reused. Restored rough-cast plaster and stonework was extensively used as reference to the historic Westcliff  residential architecture.

Ground floor was opened up completely, demolishing internal walls to create a substantial living, dining and kitchen space, with bi-fold doors leading to new flanking covered verandas. Original features such as the staircase and fireplaces were retained and enhanced, and the "ghosts" of the removed walls could be read in tiled ribbons in the restored timber flooring.

First floor accommodation was increased to four bedrooms (each with en-suite) and central craft room. The craft room ceilings were removed to expose the original timber structure, and skylights added to admit natural light.

Basement floor was converted to home office with independent entrance, an guest cloak.

A pool, independent one bedroom pool house for granny, garages and staff accommodation was added in two additional buildings.

Residence Empire Place, Sandhurst

with Slee & Co

Residence Empire Place was originally designed in the early eighties by renowned architect Louis Louw. The new owner wanted the 2400m² house thoroughly modernised without compromising the original distinctive architecture. This involved replacing all finishes, fittings and equipment.

Extensive areas of ceramic floor and wall tiles were removed and replaced with large format Jerusalem Limestone tiles, flowing out onto the pool surrounds and balconies. The existing Merbau door and window frames were replaced after years of neglect, and matching Balau decking added to bathrooms and roof gardens to compliment it.

Dated white bathrooms were reorganised and refinished in warm limestone and timber to give a luxury spa appearance, and rounder off with Starck sanitary and brass ware from Hansgrohe and Duravit.  A new spa wing was added, complete with Agape spa bath, sauna, steam room and refrigerated plunge pool.

The new kitchen cabinetry was by Berloni, designed with the local agent, then custom manufactured and imported from Italy. It featured embossed stainless steel tops and high gloss faces finish in dark stone green.  Appliances was by Ilve. Wardrobes was also by Berloni, and finished in satin tan.

The house was extensively automated, and all systems and equipment could be controlled via mobile phone (all but the temperature control of the sauna!). Light fittings are by Lumen8.

Interior design was by Stephen Falke, and landscape design by Patrick Watson.
